Alex Marzo has envisioned our future long-haul transportation with Volvo Ants, an aero neumatic transport systems. Through extensive research in biomimicry, this industrial designer has come up with transportation system inspired by ants. It implements ants behavior as a cohesive system as you know their ability to communicate with each other, distribute food, and all responsibilities in their community is intriguing. The overall concept starting from its models, systems, processes and elements take inspiration from ants in order to solve our problems.

Volvo Ants implement idea to lease micro-containers to multiple companies, in this way they can ensure that they are always filled to capacity. Their container union is flexible, therefore allowing better articulation in navigation and avoid jack knife accidents.

SPV (Solar Powered Vehicle) Concept by Omer Sagiv

The SPV is a solar powered vehicle made out of aluminum structure with flexible thin-film modules fixed to it. It’s sleek, it’s futuristic, it’s kinda remind us about Nuon solar car from Delft University. The shaft in the centre of the SPV functions as an inbuilt cooling system, integrated in its form. The aerodynamic form allows it to collect energy through a long drive in the desert (or any sunny environment). Hence not only that it is powered by solar power, this car can also recharge your home power, with the extra energy collected using its solar panels.

Cordless Kettle for Peel by HJC Design

This Cordless Kettle is the second product released in 2012 as part of Kitchenware design for Peel. You probably still remember the coffee machine design, this kettle features similar artistic design with subtle soothing blue light. The main aesthetic centrepiece of this unique kettle is the elegantly crafted surfaces that peel away to form the spout.

The lid comprising of a sleek rippled surface pivots open to help communicate where to fill with water. Both the lid and handle are crafted from pressed stainless steel, with their edges falling away into a sea of soft blue light encircling them. Continuous soft glowing LED band lights up the room with colour to indicate when the kettle is boiling and subtly indicate the water level display.

Intricate 3D lines seamlessly fuse the kettle through an unbroken jet black polished band to contrast with the satin matte body.

The kettle boasts a 1750ml maximum water capacity, detachable base, auto-shut off and a flat stainless steel concealed element for fast boiling and easy cleaning.

Lush Bar Stool Keep Its Design Minimal Yet Appealing and Eye-Catching

The Lush bar stool is one of the most popular designs on the market, exclusive to and designed by Atlantic Shopping, making it a superb stylistic and practical choice for any modern home. When comparing the Lush to other items available, the seat is instantly eye catching with its exemplary levels of padding, providing superb visual impact in any environment. The style of the seat follows a deliberate, minimalist ethos that means it is suitable in all locations and with any type of decor, matching Bauhaus and Art Deco periods as well as contemporary movements.

The stitch detailing segments the surface of the upholstery tying back to retro smoking chairs and loungers, adding a traditional touch to its repertoire as well as enhancing the plush, lavish look of Lush bar stool. Three sections on the seat match those on the back; giving a balanced, harmonious look as well as corresponding to the position of the cushions beneath.

The Lush bar stool was designed to be a padded style in order to make it a comfortable place to sit, even after extended periods of usage, and high density foam was chosen due to its soft yet supportive nature. It is also easily molded so each of the sections used is ergonomically sculpted, creating a striking side profile that hugs the body. This is helped by the tall backrest, which is curved for the lordosis and relieves stress to the lumbar regions, sweeping gracefully above the seat for added visual acuity.

Supple faux leather was chosen for its resistance to staining and harsh chemicals, as well as coming in a plethora of colors from monochrome black and white to funky green and zesty orange. For an even more luxuriant, upmarket feel, real leather was introduced, showcasing a beautiful grain and a pleasing aroma.

A steel frame of Lush bar stool is ideal for rigidity and durability, perfect for the high impact environment of a kitchen or breakfast bar, and the thickness upgraded from the usual to add even more strength. A large base was used for exemplary stability and as the design evolved, heavy square bases were introduced. Built around a cast iron core to lower the center of gravity they make the Lush even more stable and the design even more fluid, matching the oblong footrest above. This feature is expertly crafted by hand, shaped from a single steel bar into the ideal perch for your weary feet, seamlessly welded onto the central stem for a professional flourish and subsequently finished in the same manner as the rest of the frame.

Atlantic Shopping bar stools come in a number of different frame finishes and due to the popularity of the Lush, all are available. Chrome plating gives a smooth reflective surface that is resistant to scuffs and scrapes, whilst brushed steel has a more subdued effect and ties in with modern kitchen appliances and fittings. Finally, Lush bar stool black chrome or gunmetal is available, providing much the same look as chrome but in a darker tone that sets it apart from the crowd.

Blu Musical Keyboard : Electronic Musical Instrument for Kids

Inspired by Toy Blocks, Blu musical keyboard is a musical instrument for kids which can be played just like building blocks. The keyboard design works as re-imagined keys in a modular and highly flexible fashion. When children play with building blocks, they develop shape recognition skill and improve eye-hand coordination. Keeping this in mind, the designer started to develop unique musical instrument that works similar to building blocks toy, but in this case, children learn to understand and composed songs. Blu musical keyboard also improves children’s sense of timing and improvisation.

Each key is movable, children can set its position to determine the pitch and timing of the notes. Since this device is meant for children, it’s been designed with colorful and bright interfaces to get their attention. Children can manipulate notes in an exciting and educational manner.

The functionality of Blu musical keyboard can be expanded by adding additional keys to create drum sound or sound recording functionalities. Will this concept ever see the light of day? Well, we have a good feeling about this, since the designer said that there are two functional prototypes that were developed already. We’ll keep our finger crossed.

The Hear Aid : Hearing Aid Concept by Tom Hudson

Tom Hudson has shared with us his hearing aid concept called, Hear Aid. The objective of this project was to develop a product where children with hearing impairment can wear this aid without having to be afraid of being stigmatized in the areas of their deafness.

Tom explanations about his hearing aid concept:

From my first hand research into hearing loss and working alongside those who are unfortunate to have the disability, I quickly identified that the stigma relating to hearing loss is both real and perceived. It is a key factor in the delay in taking up hearing aids, and makes many people unwilling to tell others about their hearing loss. One element of stigma is the fear that people with hearing loss are seen as less capable with one in three users worried of what people think.

From my research I identified a specific market of children aged between 5-7. The aim of my project was to develop a product that reduced the stigma surrounding hearing loss, enabling children with the disability to become more accepted in society whilst promoting greater independence.

Whilst focusing on developing a design response to meet the particular needs of children with hearing loss, I developed the Hear Aid, a fun and exciting casing for a range of existing pediatric hearing aids. First hand insight into the process of understanding how hearing loss affects children both physically and mentally was crucial to my final product. My product helps in tackling the stigma associated with hearing aids and hearing loss, whilst involving additive manufacture in the process. Additive manufacturing technology offers geometric freedom allowing the Hear Aid to be custom fit to the users ear. Enabling the user to become the co-designer of the products appearance, (within software limitations) allows personal ‘desires’ to be incorporated, resulting in a deeper sense of ownership towards the product.

Pony Stroller by Zou Huan

Buoyancy-Road by Joh Minhoo

There are times when sudden raining or snowing can make central lane markings on the road become invisible, thus causing traffic congestion or worst, traffic accidents. Buoyancy-Road design tries to solve this issue by automatically rising lane separator when water or snow obscures a road’s lane markings. This buoyant lane separator emerges due to its buoyant quality, therefore, when water or snow covers the road over the height of the traffic lane, it will raise this device automatically. In this way, drivers will still be able to recognize the position of the lane markings. Buoyancy-Road system can also be activated manually in the case of a temporary lane reversal.
